Fasting (or Praying) for Student Revival

by John-David Culbertson on August 01, 2022

I (John-David) am so excited for the 2022-2023 school year! We are going to have a great year with our students. We have some amazing events planned and we are already looking at camps and mission trips for next summer. We tried something new last year; we tried doing our DNow in the fall and it seemed to go well. We’re going to try that again this year. Our DNow will be September 30-October 2. We’ll kick off late on Friday and finish after church on Sunday.

This event is going to set the stage for us for this school year. Our theme for the weekend is going to be “Revival to Vital.” We believe that our student ministry should be “vital” to our schools and our community. We believe that all student ministries should be this way. That is why we are inviting other churches from the area to join us. Before we kick of the year, we’ve decided to do a fast and prayer time for this event and for student ministry revival in our church and city.

Maybe you’ve never done a fast, that’s okay, a lot of people haven’t this is a great time join us and there are a lot of ways you can participate. Here is the plan, but read to the end, because even if you cannot fast with us or cannot fast for the full 24 hours, you can still participate.

On Tuesday, August 2nd, we’re going to meet at the Junior Highs, Freshman Campuses, and High Schools across Midland and we are going to prayer walk the schools. This is going to kick off the fast. Eat a meal around 6:00pm on Tuesday and then meet at one of the schools. We have no idea who will be at what schools, so you may be alone. If you are alone, pray boldly and prayer walk your school. We are asking that you either go to the closest of these schools to you or go to a school where your kids attend. The closest school to me is Legacy High, so that is where I will be at 6:30pm on the 2nd. Tuesday evening we are praying for revival in our schools.

Wednesday morning, we ask that you pray the student ministry at our church. If you are reading this and you go to a different church, see if you can do this at your church. Anyone who is free at 7:15am is invited to meet in the prayer room at the church (west side). We’re going to prayer walk the student ministry hallway. If you cannot come up and pray in the building, join us in prayer from home. Pray for God to bless the conversations that take place in our rooms this year. Pray for the events we plan. And pray for our students.

Wednesday at lunch, we ask that everyone pray from wherever they are for our Disciple Now event. We ask that you pray for revival among our students and among the students in the Permian Basin. Pray that our students will boldly invite lost and unchurched friends. Pray for the speaker and the band who will help lead. Pray for the small group leaders that will come from colleges across Texas. Pray for the meals, the rec time, and the Bible studies, pray that God will work in every moment of the weekend.

Wednesday at dinner, we ask that you pray for Midpoint (our Wednesday night Bible study) in the 2022-2023 school year. We ask that you pray for the lessons Wayne, Journey, Dakota, and I prepare. We ask that you pray for the games we play and the conversations we have with students and that they have with each other. Pray for growth and transformation. We also ask that you pray for the First Priority Clubs meeting on school campuses across Midland.

Instead of eating at these 4 times, we ask that you join us in prayer. If you can only fast for one meal, then fast for one meal. If you can’t fast at all, join us in prayer anyways, but we do want to challenge you to push yourself. Read up on fasting, there is some prep you can do to make it easier, meals you can eat going into that will help. But remember, it’s supposed to be hard, that’s kind of the point. I hope that you will join us in prayer and if possible, fast along with us.
